Safe Firearm Storage Saves Lives!
-
Between 2013 and 2017, Montana faced a troubling reality as youth suicides among those aged 11 to 17 were nearly three times the national average for the same demographic. Research indicates that homes with firearms present a significantly higher risk of suicide—between four to ten times greater—compared to those without. Alarmingly, firearms were involved in 63% of youth suicides across the state.
The alarming statistics surrounding youth suicides underscore a critical issue that demands attention and action. From 2011 to 2022, firearms were tragically involved in over 60% of these heartbreaking incidents. The 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey reveals that a staggering 10% of high school students in Montana, specifically those in grades 9-12, reported having attempted suicide within the past year, while the figure rises to 15.6% for students in 7th and 8th grades. Additionally, the data indicates a concerning 380% increase in suicidal ideations among students receiving “D” grades compared to their peers achieving “A” grades. These figures not only highlight the urgent need for supportive interventions and mental health resources but also emphasize the importance of fostering an environment where young individuals feel safe, valued, and empowered to seek help.
Understanding the critical importance of safe firearm storage, the goal is to enhance education on mental health and provide greater access to safe firearm storage solutions, ultimately working together to save lives and foster a supportive community for our youth.
